WS_FTP FTP Client Set Up Instructions

This tutorial applies to the following programs:
  1. Version 7 Pro Client
  2. Version 7 Pro Explorer *

*Version 7 Pro Explorer sets up the same way as listed in this tutorial. By setting up a profile using these instructions, a profile for this account will be available for use within the Explorer version. CTS Does not provide direct support for the operation of the actual use of FTP programs. Please consult your help documentation for more information.

You may just about any FTP client to transfer and manage your site. However, we only provide instructions for the most popular clients available. If your FTP client is not listed here, please check your program's help section or the maker's website for more details on setting up your client.

In addition, our support is limited to the set up of your FTP account settings within the client. CTS does not offer support, either on-line or by telephone, on how to use any specific features of your program.

 

Step 1



 


Make Sure WS_FTP Version 7 is running.


Connect your computer to the Internet.

Next, Launch WS_FTP Pro by clicking on the WS_FTP Pro icon that's on your desktop.  If you do not have a WS_FTP Pro icon on your desktop, click on the Start button and then select Programs, then WS_FTP, and then WS_FTP Pro.



 


 

Step 2


 


When you open WS_FTP Pro, you're taken directly to the Connection Window. First, highlight the folder labeled MySites by clicking on it once. Once you've highlighted MySites, click on the New Site icon from the toolbar (this will create a new site profile within the MySites folder).


 

Step 3


Next, you will need to start entering your account settings.

Site Profile: Call this what you want. This is for you to identify this FTP site.

Host Name or IP:
enter your domain name as yourdomain.com. (Replace this with your actual domain name. Do not include the http://www)

 
 


 

Step 4


Next, you will need to enter your user information:

User_id: Assigned to you when you signed up.
Password: enter your assigned password.
(Username and password is case sensitive)

You may choose to check the save password box. Leave it blank if you are worried about security on your computer. Generally if other people use your computer whom you do not want to have automatic login access to your site's files.

Click Finish when complete.


 

Step 5


Once you've entered you User Id and Password (leave the Account field blank), click the Finish button. This will bring you back at the Connection Window, with your information filled in the appropriate fields.  You'll notice a new folder for the FTP site has been added within the MySites directory.
 

Your Connection window should now look like this:


 

Step 6

Next, click on advanced Properties on the current screen. Select the STARTUP options tab. In the Remote Directory box, enter your domain name. (yourdomain.com without the http://www) and click apply.

This will complete your set up process.

(Note: If you do not specify a start up directory in your server profile set up, you will need to perform a change directory command every time you log into your FTP server)

The left side (or left pane) is a view of the files on your computer or your Local System. The right side is a view of the files on the FTP site or Remote System.

To transfer files between your local system and your remote system, first highlight the file by clicking on the file name once. Then click the appropriate green transfer arrow located between the right and left pane.  The right arrow transfers files from the left side (your computer) to the right site ( Website) and visa versa.

Please make sure that you have placed at least one default document such as an index.htm or another qualifying default document. Please see our technical support center for more information on default documents.
